It’s that beautiful time again… The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the squirrels are out to play, and the aroma of fresh new life lingers the air. Everything about this season is bright, refreshing, and harmonious.
In order for us humans to achieve the same harmony as nature, we tend to mimic what it is doing. This is why we find ourselves hibernating in blankets in Winter, and why we feel the need to clean house come Spring. Essentially, it’s our innate way of connecting to, or becoming “one” with the earth.
For this reason, Spring is acclaimed by leading health professionals all over the world as the perfect time for cleansing the body and mind. Here at Koso-Masa, we couldn’t agree more! Which is exactly why we developed this guide – to help you optimize your internal spring cleaning efforts.

Adjust Your Mental Dialogue
This is perhaps one of the most challenging, yet powerful things you can do for yourself.
As the cliche goes, “you are your toughest critic”. But we have news for you; you don’t have to be! At least not all the time. While it’s good to be critical of yourself for the purpose of growing and becoming better, you really ought to keep tabs on the way you criticize yourself.
In order to adjust your mental dialogue, you’ll want to start by paying close attention to the way you converse with yourself inside your mind. Really focus on the things you think, and analyze them. The more you explore your psychological tendencies, the more you’ll be surprised to see how negative your thinking can be.
Once you pinpoint the uncomfortable things you find, work on deconstructing those beliefs and reforming them into positive ones. We realize this is much easier said than done, but with a little persistence, this practice alone will “spring clean” you in more ways than one!
Practice Traditional Meditation
Meditation is a mind and body practice of learning to focus your attention.
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 8% of Americans practice meditation. That’s a whopping 18 million.
While some people use meditation to think something through, i.e. the expression “to meditate on it”, it is also commonly practiced for spirituality and “stilling” reasons.
Tips for Meditation
- Go to a quiet, serene place, or create one on your own.
- Carve out a convenient chunk of time (we recommend at least 10-15 minutes daily).
- Burn incense. Or candles. Whichever you prefer.
- Sit upright and comfortably.
- Breathe deeply.
- Focus on each breath you take.
Release Negative Emotions
This stems from our first point, but in a different way. Releasing negative emotions is one of the most liberating things you can do.
We realize it’s not realistic to release every negative emotion, but as a reminder: You have control over more than you think!
How to Release Your Negative Emotions
Dig deep into your psyche and locate the negative thoughts and memories you’re storing. People often paint a picture of their most hurtful experiences being located in the back of their mind in a “box”. If you can relate, open that box, and address the problem. The longer it gathers cobwebs, the more likely it is to manifest in your body physically through disease.
Are you holding a grudge? Set it free. Have you hurt someone? Apologize. Are you harboring guilt for something you think you’ve done wrong? Forgive yourself. Act.
Another cleansing thing you can do is write all negative thoughts down on paper, and then burn what you wrote. Doing this will give you a sense of authority, and positively affirm the fact that you control your emotions; not the other way around.
Feed Your Body What it Needs
A diet rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and lean protein is the best possible diet for your body.
For cleansing time, you’ll want to consume lots of fruits, veggies, and seeds. Stay as far away from refined white sugar, gluten, and dairy as possible during a cleanse. These foods harm your insides mercilessly over time. Overindulgence in them can lead to something called intestinal permeability.

To make cleansing with food easy, stock up on a bunch of organic fruits and veggies, throw them into a juicer or nutribullet, and blend away. Have fun with this! You can mix and match to your palatial preference, or steal juice ideas directly from us.
Here’s an example of a cleansing juice recipe we love:
– 1 cup blueberries
– 1 cup raw spinach (include stems)
– ½ cup raw kale
– ½ mango
– ¼ cup diced pineapple
– 1 small slice ginger root (approx. 1 tsp)
Drink More Water
Water is the source of vitality and life!
According to WedMD, drinking water helps clear acne-prone skin, aids in digestion, and helps maintain the balance of body fluids. Ideally, you should drink at least 190 milliliters of water daily to stay hydrated. That’s about half a gallon. Think of this as a baseline.
Whatever amount of water you consume beyond 190mL will further energize you, and will also contribute to flushing your system.
In case the taste of water alone bores you, there are several fun and easy ways to spruce up your water to enjoy it more. We recommend using slices of lemon or infusing your water with a vegetable, such as cucumber. Just a few slices is all you need.
Reconnect with Nature
Get outside and hang out with the birds and the bees. Open your windows to create a cross-breeze of warming spring air. Or if you have a garden, plant something new.
Doing just about anything in nature or involving nature in the Springtime will give you a sense of calming rejuvenation. The energy of the season is known to bring about feelings of positive change and starting over. Why not go outside and soak it all in?
Get up, get out, and do something physical. It could be anything. As long as it elevates your heart rate, we approve!

Due to daylight savings time, we’re more likely to stay up later than usual in the Spring . Just make sure all the extra hours you’re spending outside, connecting with nature, or exercising, you are making up for later in the form of rest and sleep.
