3 Reasons why A Healthy dog means A Healthy You

3 Reasons why A Healthy dog means A Healthy You

I believe that the greatest gift you can give your family and the world is a healthy you.

-Joyce Meyer

Overall health remains to be one of the most essential aspects in getting the most out of one’s life. May it be mental, physical or spiritual wellness, how one keeps his or her health dictates the quality of his life.

mans best friend

Needless to say, the everlasting human concept of “Health is Wealth” still proves to be the most truthful of them all.

However, in sport of this repeated emphasis on health, one’s state of health is still often taken for granted. In the hustle and bustle of this generation, people have place work, studies or business as THE top priority when in fact its health that should come first of the list. In fact, a study in the United States reported that most employees aren’t really familiar with (thus, not taking advantage of) the healthcare system provided by the government. This is an alarming reality considering the fact that there are rapidly growing epidemics in practically every corner of the globe.

What people don’t recognize is that there are various ways to go about maintaining good health. Sadly, there are people who don’t realize that some of the things they normally do can actually improve their overall well-being.

man and his dog

The perfect example is having one of the best companions anyone could have – a dog!

Having and keeping a healthy dog at home does not only encourage love and affection, it is also a catalyst of many other health benefits:

Lessens the Likelihood of General Illnesses

Since these cute pets are highly active and playful, they bring about a wide array of bacteria and other foreign substances at home. However, contrary to popular belief, research shows that a home with a furry friend can reduce the likelihood of childhood allergies by 14 percent.  Anyone who has ever wiped down muddy paw prints knows dogs aren’t necessarily the cleanest family members, but the extra dirt and allergens a dog introduces to a home actually boosts the immune system of their human owners.

Surprisingly, dogs are very good boosters of immunity to diseases.

The ‘hygiene hypothesis’ suggests that man’s modern day obsession with cleanliness has left their bodies incapable of reacting appropriately. Not only does this pernickety approach to what people touch leave them open to attacks from bad bacteria, it also leaves their immune systems hyperactive to harmless substances like pollen, and results in allergies.

Researchers from Arizona’s Department of Psychiatry have launched a study called “Dogs as Probiotics for People” to examine whether dogs can improve human health by acting as a probiotic, particularly in older people. However, before getting them as one’s probiotics, they should have probiotics on their own too. Probiotics for dogs help them become healthy and free from general illnesses themselves.

Humans already have a strong emotional bond with their dogs and the study explores the possible existence of a biological bond that can improve the immune system of both people and their pets. The researchers say their work aims to build on previous findings that dog owners are much more likely to share the same kind of “good” bacteria with their dogs.

Studies have also found that children who grow up with dogs are less likely to develop immunity-related problems, such as asthma and allergies. Keeping dogs healthy can lead to keeping one’s health boosted and reinforced.

Allows for more opportunity to exercise

Relaxation comes in a plethora of sources. One of which is by doing physical activities. It is true that physical activity can in fact make the brain function even better.

Moving those muscles can provide the same effects to the brain as it is when doing mental exercise. This is due to the fact that the most powerful brain boosters are activities which incorporate both aerobic activity and coordination. Physical activities like sports essentially improve one’s mood, improve concentration as well as mend bad sleeping habits. This bridges the physical and perceptual aspects that make up a person’s overall mental health.

This is where dogs can bring their owner the most benefit.

girl running with dog

Engaging in outdoor activities like playing fetch gives a person a natural energy boost, and allows them to let off steam. It also makes a person more physically fit, strengthening muscles and bones, which helps not only the body, but also the self-esteem. Also, since these lovely pets live actively and are always sniffing around places, walking them can also be a form of a physical exercise., and bonding moment between the master and the pet.

Similarly, according to studies, having pets like dogs can make one less likely to have heart disease. This is because owners exercise more when walking their pets, and therefore induce lower blood pressure. Having a pet person is actually hitting two birds with one stone. People get to love their pets and love themselves all at the same time.

Lowers chances of Depression, Replaces with Love

Mental health is central in having good overall health because of the fact that the human mind works in intricacies and works under a lot of pressures coming from various factors. This gives light to the fact that training the mind to be mentally stable is one of the most arduous tasks to handle. This is for the fact that most methods can be quite tedious and uninteresting.

With dogs, everything is brand new and exciting while providing wonders for one’s mental health

Also, petting dog induces a feeling of relief and relaxation. It can similarly help the body release relaxation hormones, and in turn, level down the stress hormones. This soothing effect is a major advantage especially when coming home tired and stressed. Dogs have a way to make everything feel okay.

caretaker and dog

It is a given fact that dogs can be great domestic companions. Often times, they are intuitive and seek to comfort his owner out when he’s feeling down, refusing to allow that person to remain alone. A warning though – dogs should not be used to fill a temporary void and then pushed aside. A dog is a long-term commitment, and it’s not always easy.

If a person is up to it, they can provide enough loving feeling for their owner through the good times and the bad.

Talk to his or her pet about anything — one’s hopes, dreams, secrets and bad moments – is another way to keep one’s mood up. In spite of having a one way conversation, pet owners can still talk to them, lament about a breakup, or utter truths that one may be afraid to actually share with someone else. It’s really not about the conversation. It is the act of releasing to a living being that makes the gesture worth doing.

A dog can be the perfect “person” to go to when that person wants to vent without any potential repercussions.

Most importantly, having a dog to care for can give a person a feeling of purpose, which can be crucial when one is feeling really down and overwhelmed by negative thoughts. By caring for a dog, or another person or animal in need, a person is focusing on something else other than oneself. One’s good deeds and one’s pet’s positive response give a person a feeling of instant gratification.

How Two Become One – Guide to Having a Healthy Relationship

Being in a relationship proves to be one of the most thrilling parts of a person’s life. This holds true for many occasions. However, the reality is that these people will have bad times once in awhile. The ups and downs is an embedded fact in the life of having a partner. How people manage the relationship roller coaster ride divides those who can endure the test of time, and those who are at the edge of an impending downward spiral.

healthy couple

There are a variety of things that gives character to every relationship. Some may find their relationship a little too gray, which happens more often when the flowers, chocolates and romantic dinner have gone too old.

On the other hand, there are couples who find their foundation sturdier and well-seated as they keep the fervor aflame. True enough, there are ways for couples to keep themselves motivated to stay as one unit.

The truth of the matter is that one couple will always have varying experiences and traits as compared to the next couple. The way they put perspective in their relationship serves as a significant factor in keeping the harmony between partners.

This is why it is similarly important that people in a relationship put an effort in finding ways to make their lives more exciting and stimulating. One of the most effective ways people found to improve their relationships is by integrating a healthy, active lifestyle for both parties. The logic may come as a very simple one: be healthy together, stay healthy together, and live longer together.

But how does one start in this health and wellness endeavour with his or her partner? Here are ways to jumpstart and bring the healthy drive.

Travel Longer, Endure Together

The health benefits of being able to travel and see the world have been established as an effective way to keep the mind, body and spirit healthy. Thousands, if not millions, of people throughout the world have actually realized the wonders of being able to interact with nature. Similarly, the benefits of traveling may as well be true when done together, bringing in a whole new world of adventure into the relationship.

For a single person, seeing nature can induce a sense of finding a new perspective and purpose in life. This is especially important to people who are confused and are baffled with a lot of pressures and stresses. As for two people in a relationship, traveling can lead the couple to see that nature presents a new light unlike any other activity.

Traveling brings togetherness and synchronicity for a couple, as well as a revamped outlook in their life together. Interaction with Mother Nature can make one realize the interconnectedness of humanity, as well as the fact that life is a gift that needs to be shared. This may come as an essential part of any relationship, and a new brand of bond may come forth.

couple hiking together

There are various activities to choose from while being on a natural road trip – hiking or mountain climbing, trekking, island hopping, diving, or even having a long drive just to see the wonders of the world. And it doesn’t have to be expensive too!

There are many ways couples can get thrifty, such as being mindful of the things they bring and getting the best deal with their transportation. On top of that, another major element to consider with travelling is the cost for lodging. Couples can get best value for their money by availing services from guaranteed hotels. If you aspire to travel to Canada together, your trip will be more fun and memorable with your Vernon accommodations  all set when you get there.

Besides, the best way to end a long day on the road is to be one with nature and the love of your life!

Healthy Dining, Relationship Shining

Nowadays, one of the things that couples forget is the value of spending time to wine and dine together. This proves to be an integral part of any relationship because it sends a message that one took the time to be with the other in certain times of the day. However, the hustle and bustle of life leaves people to forget about its importance, prompting a certain separation.

It is the little things in life that matter in the grand scheme of things.

couple cooking

By reminding both parties to make time for that brunch or that romantic dinner, the relationship can be strengthened to endure the challenges during down moments. What can really amp up dining together is dining together in a healthy way.

People in a relationship want their partners to live a long and fruitful life. Of course, that does not come with eating a lot of unhealthy food. Staying together for dinner and watching each other eat healthy greens, the all-important protein and that occasional wine can prove to be an enjoyable couple’s moment.

So what other things does eating healthy together bring about?

Studies show that most of the body building phase is done in the kitchen. This means that what a person eats dictates just how his or her body lives up to the exercise or activity it has done for the day. Nutrition should be the number one focus of starting body builders, and with great reason, considering the fact that what people put in their bodies is what actually reflects outside.

With consistency and great discipline, couples can get the bodies they’ve always desired. The fact that both person are in the best shape of their lives can ultimately bring out the best mind set, togetherness and excitement they need to endure the ups and downs of being in a relationship.

Exercise Together

Exercising can bring out a sense of self-worth for a single person. It may be surprising to find out what wonders it brings when two people, intertwined with love, take care of each other physically and mentally at the same time.

doing planks

Some couples who grow tired of their relationships need only find the right amount of activity inside and outside the home. The spark both people yearn for can actually be found in exercising together. Exercising for two can not only boost health for two people, it can also bring out a new perspective on how they can outlast any problems being in a relationship presents.

In fact, many people have already found out the great significance of exercising together as a couple. Many couples have documented a sense of extreme joy when achieving a certain goal, as well as the intense motivation both persons give out to each other to complete a certain exercise or task. This is imperative for people in a relationship because knowing what makes a partner motivated can induce a sense of depth and familiarity between two people.

On the other hand, exercising together brings forth a sense of physicality couples need to enjoy their intimacy. This is an important part in any relationship, especially a sense of safety and contentment that each person brings into the fold.

Staying healthy as a single person can be hard. Staying healthy as a couple could be just as hard. However, knowing that a partner is there to support any endeavour can boost one’s morale and motivation. Outstanding benefits can definitely be reaped when couples opt to live a healthy lifestyle together.

Activities like travelling together can put a different light on the relationship, physically and mentally. Also, spending time to dine together can attest that one’s partner is a priority in the relationship. In this regard, eating healthy together raises the relationship’s level even more. Similarly, doing physical exercise together can improve a certain state of physicality as well as a mental drive that can only be brought about by pushing each other to the limits. All of these activities induce strength for the body, and fortitude for the mind.

Heart Alert – Daily Routines That are Damaging Your Heart

Heart Alert – Daily Routines That are Damaging Your Heart

Imagine this: it’s early morning. It’s time to eat breakfast, your daily dose of mega-protein breakfast is laid out in front of you – 10 strips of bacon, 3 hotdogs,  2 eggs, and jug full of milk (okay, maybe no one eats THIS much, but you get the point). Your “healthy” breakfast is now underway.

Then after breakfast comes a full lunch, comprising of your favorites: steak and mashed potatoes. Before you know it, it’s dinnertime, and you say hello to another round of delicious, but not so very healthy foods. Though it may seem reasonable because you’re famished (as always), this eating pattern has now become a part of your daily routine.

heart graphic

It initially feels right to stuff your body full of all the food and energy that it is going to need in order to survive another day. This kind of habit makes you feel that you are healthy since you are eating three times a day.

Then again, there are things that you regularly do that you thought were harmless to your body, but are actually harming you one bite after another.

So you start eating vegetables. You try to ignore your cravings for a mouth-watering pork chop. At some point, you let go of the tension and decide to “give yourself a break” with a ton of french fries as a snack.

You may have changed your diet, but it does not guarantee that you are already healthy. This is just another habit that you thought was OK, but may actually be harming your body.

One of the things that takes the worst hit in your body is your heart.  Without you knowing, you may have certain habits that are actually destroying your healthy heart in the long run.

Try to think about your life choices so far. Consider which of the following habits you are currently practicing, and see if it’s about time to stop them in order to save you tons of money in hospital bills – or worse.

Know Your Heart

Even though the functions of the heart might seem mundane to you, the organ still serves as one of them most, if not the most, important organ inside your body. It is vital to make sure that your heart gets enough attention from you in order to prevent anything that might disrupt its main responsibility – pumping blood throughout your body.

Remember that your blood holds the life-sustaining oxygen and nutrients that your body needs. No organ inside your body has the ability to pump blood like the heart. In other words, it might be easy to change your whole house air purifier but that is not the case with your heart.

Habits That Can Damage Your Heart

The following are some of the worst habits that you might want to consider removing from your routine in order to keep your heart healthy:

  1.   You Sit All Day

If you don’t have a daily exercise routine, you tend to always end up sitting in front of your computer or television. But you might want to consider standing up and getting your running shoes and sports attire. People who spend at least five hours a day sitting have a higher rate of heart failure. Consider walking around your campus or outside your office during lunch breaks if you really cannot avoid sitting for too long.

cant avoid

  1.   You Eat Too Much

Overeating destroys your heart. No matter how much you love eating pizza or burgers. At some point, you just need to stop. As the song says, too much love can kill you.

  1.   You Sleep Too Much

Sleeping beauty is the only person who stays healthy even after oversleeping. Obviously, you are not Aurora, and you are not in an animated film. Sleeping too much can harm your heart by putting it through extreme levels of blood pressure and levels of stress. In addition, making a habit of sleeping less than five hours a day can also damage your heart. Thus, make sure you sleep well every day.

  1.   You Do Not Floss Everyday

You read it right. If you do not floss regularly, chances are your heart might be damaged. Recent studies concluded that cardiac health conditions and dental diseases are related to each other. Your swollen gums open the door for bacteria that want to enter your mouth’s blood vessels. The bacteria can eventually reach your heart and result in the narrowing of the blood vessels in and on the heart itself.

  1.   You’re Dealing With Too Much Stress

Stress (usually financial) can also affect your heart’s health. More so if it leads to you thinking about how to pay your hospital bills! If you are starting to feel too much stress, learn to stop, relax and restart. You have to learn how to manage your stress levels. Extremely high stress levels can result in high blood pressure, depression or even insomnia. These negative results can disturb your active lifestyle and affect you health altogether.

  1.   You Consume Too Much Salt

Your blood pressure is going to suffer because of too much salt. Remember that high blood pressure can trigger a number of heart diseases. Then again, it is easy to leave your salt container in the kitchen, but it does not guarantee that you are not already having too much sodium chloride. Junk food and other processed food also contain salt that you may unknowingly be eating.

  1.   You Smoke

Lungs are not the only price you are going to pay if you keep on smoking. It can also damage your heart. If you stop smoking immediately, then it can lower your risk of having heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, or breathing problems. If you are not a smoker, then make sure to avoid secondhand smoking. Being a secondhand smoker has higher probability of compromising your heart as compared to first hand smokers.

  1.   You Drink Too Much

Unlike smoking, drinking moderately is fine for your heart. However, too much alcoholic drinks can increase your risks of high blood pressure, high level of blood fats, and even heart failure. The habit of drinking excessively can make you gain weight, which then could lead to heart problems. It’s fine to have drinks with college friends or co-worker during weekends, but make sure to remember your heart’s condition.

  1.   You Don’t Take Your Medicine

Skipping your medication could possibly result in terminal heart conditions. Your medicines might taste a little awful but your doctor prescribed them for a reason. If you are already under maintenance for blood pressure symptoms, you must not stop or skip taking your pills. High blood pressure is known as a silent killer. Thus, drink your meds, and do not allow this murderer to slay your heart.

no to medication

  1. You’re Putting Off Your Daily Checkups

Conducting daily appointments can save you from having fatal heart diseases. This practice might not entirely keep you from getting a bad heart condition, but it can help you check your health as early as possible. There are cases where patients learned about their conditions when a cure is no longer possible. Even though you are busy with work or school requirements, always make sure not to postpone your health appointments. All the money you can earn or knowledge you can gain are nothing if you end up in hospital bed just because you are too busy for a checkup.

Over-Studying – Are You Studying Too Much?

Over-Studying – Are You Studying Too Much?

Over-Studying – Are You Studying Too Much?

Are you one of those students who keep on telling yourself that student loans are SO expensive that you simply cannot afford to fail?

Are you the type of student that stays up late everynight with your cup of coffee, highlighters, sticky notes and review materials for the sake of not getting an F?

There are probably moments that you just want to lie in your bed during weekends and dream that maybe, just maybe there will be another day hidden in some self storage units in Perth which you could put between Saturday and Sunday. It just feels entirely unfair that the time between Friday and Monday always passes in what seems like seconds.

But it might be time to assess things, you might just be one of those students who believe in quantity over quality when it comes to studying and getting work done. Try to assess yourself right now. Are you one of these students?

tired study person

Try to ignore all your biases and prejudices. Focus on asking yourself if you are indeed studying more than you should.

At some point of your life, you may be over-studying in order to ace or pass your classes. You are the type of student who takes the time to review their notes during bus or train rides, as if it is an extension of the library or your room. Perhaps over studying has now become a part of your routine – just like an ordinary part of your student life.

How To Know If You’re Studying Too Much

  1.  Your eyes are starting to twitch. Eye twitching is pretty easy to recognizing, and also pretty alarming. This usually happens when you stare at something for too long.

over worked

  1.  You regularly eat your lunch or dinner later you should. If you start working on your homework at 10 in the morning, there may be more than a few times when you look at your clock, and it has suddenly jumped to 4 in the afternoon. In some cases, you completely forget to eat your dinner as the clock has already struck 12.
  2.  You now display poor personal hygiene. This happens when you stay up late at night. For an example, you start studying at one in the morning and then you end up sleeping at six. You will probably wake up at around three in the afternoon! Thus, you have completely forgotten about taking a shower! If taking a shower late in the afternoon is your regular routine, then you might be over studying.
  3.  You are consuming way too much caffeine. You drink coffee more than you drink water. You constantly remind yourself that you cannot afford to fall asleep or else you will end up paying for the same subject next term.
  4.  The library is starting to feel like your second home. In some cases, you opt to spend too much of your time in coffee shops. There are moments when the librarians or baristas have already become your new found best friends in life.

too many papers

  1.  Words become jumbled. This is when you begin to see words that are jumbled right in front of you. You cannot find where a sentence begins, or understand what you are reading at all, only to find out that you are reading the incorrect section of the incorrect book. You need sleep.
  2.  You start sleeping during classes. You may have topped your class during midterms but it’s not a good impression if your professor sees you sleeping during lectures.
  3.  Your classmates are your best friends. In other words, you do not see other group of friends aside from your classmates. You are no longer paying attention to your emotional and social needs.
  4.  You hoard your mugs, plates, spoons and forks in your bedroom. Once you arrive home, you grab your dinner and go straight to your reading materials. You start to forget that your utensils need some washing too.
  5. You pass out while reading your assigned book for your class. You cannot remember how or when you unknowingly closed your eyes. You just sleep there since your body has finally given in to the soft comforts of your bed.
  6. You have the tendency to forget things. Even though you have complete notes on your Analytical Geometry class, you cannot remember the formulas. Sometimes you even forget to study…meaning now you have to study more to make up for it!
  7. Your room looks like a complete disaster. Your clothes pile on your bed. Your used clothes have become a resident of your bedroom corner for more than three weeks now. Your school supplies are just all over the floor. Your room has gone wild.

What Are The Effects Of Studying Too Much?

  1.  The ability to learn lowers as time passes by. You always get tired. You stay up late for two or three days in a row. In other words, your body and mind are not getting enough rest.
  2.  Excessive caffeine intake can harm your heart. It can increase the risk of having high blood pressure and heart attacks.
  3.  Sacrificing quality time with your family and friends. Instead of going to hangout with your friends or go shopping on Sunday mornings, you gather all the sleep you needed in order to be ready to face Monday once again. You lost quality time with the people you treasure the most. This can harm your emotional stability.
  4.  Academic stress can lead to a damaged brain. Excessive stress can cause inflammation in your brain, which leads to memory loss and depression.
  5.  Stress can increase the rate of reproduction of cancer cells.  Due to your lifestyle, you do not allot enough time to have your regular checkups. This can lead to diseases that you might not know about. The stress can help the cancer cells spread faster.
  6.  Less time for exercise. Let’s face it – no one can exercise and study simultaneously. This lack of physical activity may lead to many different health conditions that can affect your heart.
  7.  Stress eating can lead to a number of illnesses. If you settle for sweets, this can result in diabetes. If you are a salt person, this can cause many problems with kidney function.

How Do I Change The Habit Of Studying Too Much?

  1.      List all the things you have to accomplish within a certain week, and focus on the top 5.
  2.      Categorize your workload based on importance and/or deadlines.
  3.      Strictly follow your schedule.
  4.      Do not waste your time browsing your social media accounts for an extended period of time.
  5.      Look for a place that is conducive to completing your work efficiently.
  6.      Do not use your room as your workplace in order for you to not have to remember your stress before sleeping.
  7.      Make sure to have regular, healthy breaks when you are studying.
  8.      Stay organized.

It doesn’t matter how important it is to study, too much is too much. At some point, you just have to stop worrying about your school loans and give yourself the rest that you deserve. There is no point in having A’s in all classes or passing all your exams if you end up in a hospital bed.

Remember, hospital bills are far more expensive than student loans! Instead of helping your family have a bright future, you might end up leaving them in debt.

It’s not too late to save yourself from a lot of stress in the long run. You always have your choices. You just need to learn to choose the right ones.

Shiatsu, which means “finger pressure,” is a type of massage that uses tapping and kneading of pressure points to induce targeted relaxation with every area. Originally from Japan, this therapeutic massage is done without any oils or any other lubricant. The pressing and stretching techniques may be done over light and comfortable clothing to achieve the holistic effect on the body.

This type of massage is a non-invasive therapy that primarily helps calm the senses. It also soothes the key points in the body that can reduce stress and build a more serene well-being. Shiatsu practitioners and enthusiasts believe that aside from the relaxing effect of this massage, it  also has preventative and healing effects to the body.

The holistic effects of Shiatsu range from stimulating and invigorating the body, to calming and sedating the mind to achieve a deeper sense of euphoria. Traditional Shiatsu massage includes an evaluation of the client in order to recognize any signs of imbalance. In doing so, the therapist can effectively provide the proper and most effective massage work flow on the body.

The Aroma

The best aroma to partner with a massage that aims to provide calmness is the balsamic scent. This balsamic scent can be achieved through a unique blend of nutty essential oils and earthy, subtly sweet-smelling essences.

This relaxing and soothing aroma promotes groundedness and composure. It resonates strength and depth with its rich and spicy tones. The experience of a balsamic note is similar to that of being surrounded by the luscious greens of the earth. It could accentuate the tingling relaxation from Shiatsu to help the client recognize positive emotions, and achieve the serenity he or she desires.

Some of the best essential oils to use in Shiatsu aromatherapy is eucalyptus and frankincense oil.

To ensure a more effective Swedish massage session, it should begin with clear communication on how massage therapist should go about the service. The session should be customized to the client to in order to determine the amount of pressure to be applied to the body, and which part needs to be focused on.

Unlike other types of massage, Thai massage is more enlivening and stimulating rather than other soothing and restful subtle massages. It is actually more of rigorous stretching exercise than the traditional forms of massage.

Also called yoga massage, Thai massage primarily uses the hands, elbows, legs, knees, legs, and feet to manoeuvre the client into a series of forms and stretches similar to the regular yoga. In essence, Thai massage is like doing yoga with someone else doing the work for you.

The Aroma

The warm and soft essences are the best aromas to combine with Thai massage. The aromatherapy should be able to induce a sense of balance, connecting the mental and physical planes during a relaxing and energizing massage session. This balance translates to a nurturing feeling that ultimately balances the major systems of the body.

Thai massage is perfect with grapeseed oil is good essence to use because it helps with the natural production of collagen – a protein necessary in building up and strengthening muscles and bones.  Elemi oil and spearmint oils are also effective with Thai massage. Both oils promote faster healing of any damaged tissues. Generally, these oils increase the body’s response to growth and rehabilitation of cells.

Whatever the mind and body are currently experiencing, at some point, they need to restart, recollect and jumpstart. This revitalization brings in a holistic growth that every man deserves. Once the body has recuperated, the field will be so bountiful that the fruits for harvesting would be limitless.

At the end of the day, the important thing is everyone should sit down, relax, take a deep breath and allow the universe to give soothing relief upon the weary body.

How to Effectively Spring Clean Your Body and Mind

How to Effectively Spring Clean Your Body and Mind

It’s that beautiful time again… The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the squirrels are out to play, and the aroma of fresh new life lingers the air.  Everything about this season is bright, refreshing, and harmonious.

In order for us humans to achieve the same harmony as nature, we tend to mimic what it is doing. This is why we find ourselves hibernating in blankets in Winter, and why we feel the need to clean house come Spring. Essentially, it’s our innate way of connecting to, or becoming “one” with the earth.

Spring time

For this reason, Spring is acclaimed by leading health professionals all over the world as the perfect time for cleansing the body and mind. Here at Koso-Masa, we couldn’t agree more! Which is exactly why we developed this guide – to help you optimize your internal spring cleaning efforts.

Through practicing these steps, you’ll be on your way to a happier, healthier, rejuvenated you in no time!

Adjust Your Mental Dialogue

Mental Dialogue

This is perhaps one of the most challenging, yet powerful things you can do for yourself.

As the cliche goes, “you are your toughest critic”. But we have news for you; you don’t have to be! At least not all the time. While it’s good to be critical of yourself for the purpose of growing and becoming better, you really ought to keep tabs on the way you criticize yourself.

In order to adjust your mental dialogue, you’ll want to start by paying close attention to the way you converse with yourself inside your mind. Really focus on the things you think, and analyze them. The more you explore your psychological tendencies, the more you’ll be surprised to see how negative your thinking can be.

Once you pinpoint the uncomfortable things you find, work on deconstructing those beliefs and reforming them into positive ones. We realize this is much easier said than done, but with a little persistence, this practice alone will “spring clean” you in more ways than one!

Practice Traditional Meditation

Meditation is a mind and body practice of learning to focus your attention.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 8% of Americans practice meditation. That’s a whopping 18 million.

While some people use meditation to think something through, i.e. the expression “to meditate on it”, it is also commonly practiced for spirituality and “stilling” reasons.

Tips for Meditation

  • Go to a quiet, serene place, or create one on your own.
  • Carve out a convenient chunk of time (we recommend at least 10-15 minutes daily).
  • Burn incense. Or candles. Whichever you prefer.
  • Sit upright and comfortably.
  • Breathe deeply.
  • Focus on each breath you take.

Release Negative Emotions

This stems from our first point, but in a different way. Releasing negative emotions is one of the most liberating things you can do.

We realize it’s not realistic to release every negative emotion, but as a reminder: You have control over more than you think!

How to Release Your Negative Emotions

Dig deep into your psyche and locate the negative thoughts and memories you’re storing. People often paint a picture of their most hurtful experiences being located in the back of their mind in a “box”. If you can relate, open that box, and address the problem. The longer it gathers cobwebs, the more likely it is to manifest in your body physically through disease.

Are you holding a grudge? Set it free. Have you hurt someone? Apologize. Are you harboring guilt for something you think you’ve done wrong? Forgive yourself. Act.

Another cleansing thing you can do is write all negative thoughts down on paper, and then burn what you wrote. Doing this will give you a sense of authority, and positively affirm the fact that you control your emotions; not the other way around.

Feed Your Body What it Needs

Fruits and Veggies

A diet rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and lean protein is the best possible diet for your body.

For cleansing time, you’ll want to consume lots of fruits, veggies, and seeds. Stay as far away from refined white sugar, gluten, and dairy as possible during a cleanse. These foods harm your insides mercilessly over time. Overindulgence in them can lead to something called intestinal permeability.

Fruits and Veggies Ideal for Cleansing

  • Lemon
  • Grapefruit
  • Oranges
  • Blueberries
  • Watermelon
  • Honeydew
  • Cantaloupe
  • Goji Berries
  • Blackberries
  • Coconut
  • Mangoes
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Peaches
  • Pears

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Swiss Chard
  • Cabbage
  • Avocados
  • Tomatoes
  • Celery
  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers
  • Red Beets
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower

Additional Cleansing Ingredients

  • Ginger root
  • Chia seeds
  • Flax seeds
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Turmeric

To make cleansing with food easy, stock up on a bunch of organic fruits and veggies, throw them into a juicer or nutribullet, and blend away. Have fun with this! You can mix and match to your palatial preference, or steal juice ideas directly from us.

Here’s an example of a cleansing juice recipe we love:

Green Goodness

– 1 cup blueberries

– 1 cup raw spinach (include stems)

– ½ cup raw kale

– ½ mango

– ¼ cup diced pineapple

– 1 small slice ginger root (approx. 1 tsp)

Drink More Water

Water is the source of vitality and life!

According to WedMD, drinking water helps clear acne-prone skin, aids in digestion, and helps maintain the balance of body fluids. Ideally, you should drink at least 190 milliliters of water daily to stay hydrated. That’s about half a gallon. Think of this as a baseline.

Whatever amount of water you consume beyond 190mL will further energize you, and will also contribute to flushing your system.

In case the taste of water alone bores you, there are several fun and easy ways to spruce up your water to enjoy it more. We recommend using slices of lemon or infusing your water with a vegetable, such as cucumber. Just a few slices is all you need.

Reconnect with Nature

Reconnect With Nature

Get outside and hang out with the birds and the bees. Open your windows to create a cross-breeze of warming spring air. Or if you have a garden, plant something new.

Doing just about anything in nature or involving nature in the Springtime will give you a sense of calming rejuvenation. The energy of the season is known to bring about feelings of positive change and starting over. Why not go outside and soak it all in?

Get Moving

Get Moving

Get up, get out, and do something physical. It could be anything. As long as it elevates your heart rate, we approve!

  • Go for a nature walk
  • Go for a run
  • Go to the gym (Need exercise ideas? – We have tons)
  • Climb a tree

Due to daylight savings time, we’re more likely to stay up later than usual in the Spring . Just make sure all the extra hours you’re spending outside, connecting with nature, or exercising, you are making up for later in the form of rest and sleep.
